Chapter 3 - Arabella

This was it. Everything was going to end, it was as simple as that. Arabella saw the monster coming at her and she froze in fear. It had been so long, she nearly forgot everything that Hunter had taught her about fighting, about using her weapon. Arabella thought of how unfair this seemed. She had spent all of those years in Camp and nearly died quite a few times, but it would be this day now that she was going to die. After all of that work she put in for her company, for everything she had. She was going to be killed but some giant idiot. She felt the impact of the wall, then the floor against the back of her head and she sent a prayer up to her mom, or whoever was listening. Please, let it be over quickly. And if you could, keep my face looking good? I don't want to look ugly at my funeral.

But then the glass crashed and the monster was gone in a cloud of dust. After a few tense seconds, where Arabella thought that she was dead , she opened her eyes and looked into the face of the man that had saved her life. He was familliar, but at the same time, not. He was so skinny and it looked like he hadn't had a meal in too long. Arabella realized that it was the homeless man that she never really looked at. He sat in front of her building all the time but she never had the heart to make him move. Now though, she was looking at him closer. It was hard to look past the frail frame and the facial hair. His eyes were sad and they looked almost dead, but deep inside them, she saw the special twinkle. Arabella heard his voice and saw the way he held his bow. Her heart skipped a beat and it took everything she had not to throw herself at him. Hunter. It was like her entire body sighed a sigh of relief

Arabella pushed herself off of the ground, wincing slightly. Thanks to Hunter, she was alive. Her head hurt and her back hurt from falling onto the ground..but she would live. She was about to walk towards him, when she saw that he was by her side. How did he move that fast?

"Are you okay? Are you hurt?" He said in a worried tone, his shallow eyes wide. Arabella looked at him, not really sure what to say to him. She had spent the past 2 years of her life waiting for Hunter to show up. Wanting nothing more than to spend some time with the man who made her the happiest. Now that he was standing in front of her, Arabella didn't know how to respond to him. Since when is she speechless? She is never speechless!

Arabella didn't know what to do other than throw her arms around him, holding his thin fram close to hers. She could feel his body tensen, like he had forgotten what a hug felt like and it broke her heart. Arabella pulled away from the hug to look at him, which was a bad move because it broke her heart all over again. What had happened to him?

"Hunter..what happened to you?" She asked in a worried voice, hardly more than a whisper. Arabella looked into his eyes, searching for something..anything that showed that the old Hunter was in there. The light, the joy, the life. Hunter seemed to hesitate before he answered her question.

"Long story, I'd rather not talk about it" He told her and Arabella thought back to the last time that he had a story that he didn't want to tell anyone. But she got it out anyway, it was the time when Philippa had kissed him. Arabella looked at him with sad eyes and she realized that there was too much to talk about. Too much that she had to say to him. Quickly, she grabbed her purse and her jacket, ignoring the pain.

"Come on. Let's go to my place" Arabella said to him and before she could respond, she pulled him out of her office with her. Arabella told someone to clean up the mess and that she was going home early. She looked back at Hunter who looked too stunned to say anything to her.

Stepping out onto the street, she looked back at Hunter with wide eyes. Was this really happening? It seemed too good to be true..
